Youth Justice

Living Learning is a specialist community music program, engaging young people who make music and survive under difficult circumstances. We have a particular focus on young people in the youth justice system, and those facing mental and physical health challenges in community engagement. Our work in this sector stretches over 25 years in the sector, working with many young people from across Victoria.

Community Music Program

Our community music program runs from our recording and production studio in North Melbourne, currently offering sessions on Mondays and Fridays. In this program, young people in the community are fee to attend our life-changing, transformative music mentoring sessions. Participation is free for young people currently engaged in the Youth Justice system, as part of our ongoing arrangement as a program contractor with the Victorian Department of Justice. As an NDIS provider, Living Music is also to arrange engagement sessions for young people covered by the NDIS at an accessible rate.

Our program is a one-on-one and group music mentoring sessions, usually running for 1-2 hours depending on the client’s needs, from our professional recording studio. Young people can access recording, songwriting, industry and advice and musical education from our team of music mentors, who specialise in hip hop production, electronic music, lyric writing, instrumentation and many other facets of contemporary music.

Facilitated by industry recognised professional musicians, rappers and electronic music producers, our programs are tailored to the needs of individual participants or groups. Sessions are free for young people to access if they have been engaged with the Youth Justice system, as part of our ongoing arrangement with the Department of Justice.

Custodial Music Program

Loving Music has a long history offering music pathways as a form of transformative engagement for young people in the justice system. Our Custodial Music program seeks to engage young people with a passion for music who are currently in custody in music engagement workshops. This takes the form of songwriting workshops, recording sessions and DJ Skills workshops.

Loving Music also runs and offers mentoring sessions in Visual Arts in youth justice precincts. To date, we have worked with young people to hone their skills in painting, illustration, sculpture and collage. Our work has seen extensive mural work developed in the Parkville and Malmsbury Youth Justice precincts, offering colour and an object of provide and productivity for young visual artists currently in custody.

We currently offer weekly after-hours programs for young people on site in the Malmsbury, Parkville and Cherry Creek Youth Justice Precincts.
